A new County Sheriff will be elected next year!  

According to New Mexico state law (House Bill 438), candidates for sheriff must:

· Be at least 21 years old.

· Have a minimum of 7 years of professional law enforcement experience.

· Be a resident of New Mexico and San Juan County for at least 1 year.

· Not have been convicted of a felony.

· Hold a certificate from a basic law enforcement training program .

· Not have been recalled from public office.

· You must submit a notarized affidavit certifying that you meet these qualifications when filing your candidacy.

Filing Deadlines

Next Election: The 2025 Regular Local Election is scheduled for Tuesday, November 4, 2025.

Filing Day: Candidate filing day is Tuesday, August 26, 2025, between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Where to File: File your Declaration of Candidacy and any required documents with the San Juan County Clerk’s Office in Aztec, NM .

You will need to submit:

· Declaration of Candidacy Form

· Notarized affidavit certifying you meet the qualifications

· Nominating petitions (if required by local ordinance; not mandated by state law but may be needed locally).
